Guides to Wealth Excellence

We built Ethos with a simple belief: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Ethos Difference
The Ethos Difference

When others prioritized profit over people, we chose purpose. Ethos Financial Group was founded by advisors who believed clients deserve more—more service, more expertise, and more integrity. That conviction drives everything we do.

Our culture is rooted in collaboration, where diverse perspectives and deep experience come together to deliver strategies that are as unique as the clients we serve. Every decision is guided by client needs.

Our team includes specialists across every facet of finance—attorneys, planners, investment experts—working in concert to provide holistic, exhaustive solutions. That specific team construction allows us to push boundaries, challenge conventional thinking, and create strategies that maximize wealth and add meaningful value to businesses, careers, and lives.

At Ethos, we’re not just managing assets—we’re setting a new standard for care, creativity, and client-first service.

Michael Malone

mmalone@ethosfg.com

Mike created Swarthmore Investment, LLC in 2004 with the objective of investing intelligently one client at a time. At the end of 2016, Mike changed the name of his firm to Michael Malone Investment Advisory to more fully reflect that the buck stops with him. Mike has over thirty-seven years of investment experience and serves as the Principal and Chief Investment Officer of Michael Malone Investment Advisory. His primary dedication is to his unique client portfolios: their strategy, development, implementation, and oversight.

Prior to establishing Swarthmore, Mike held senior positions in a number of global financial institutions including Merrill Lynch, Janney Montgomery Scott, and Wells Fargo Advisors. During his first year in the industry, Mike realized that using investment ideas espoused by large Wall Street firms led to disappointment for his clients. In 1976 Mike discovered the investment ideas and strategies of Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffet’s professor at Columbia, and became a believer in intelligent investing. Because Mike believes there is integrity and success in this strategy, he continues to still use it today. Through his experience and developed investment technique, Mike strives to assist his clients in navigating market downturns, such as those experienced in 2000-2002 and 2008-2009. Mike recognizes his clients’ desire not to be dragged down in bad markets, so he seeks to “control risks first and pounce on opportunities when they become available.” While most advisors pray for steadily rising markets with which they are comfortable, Mike says “bring it on” to the turbulent markets we have now.

Mike is a 1973 graduate of the University of Delaware, attaining a bachelor’s degree in political science with a concentration in the philosophy of social sciences. He also attended St. Charles Seminary High School in Catonsville, Maryland. Mike and his wife, Anne, have three daughters and five grandchildren. Financial Advisor

Larissa Costello believes that wealth management begins with listening. Throughout her career, she has found that every client carries a unique story – one shaped by their experiences, values, aspirations, and concerns for the future. Her role is to understand that story before offering guidance.

With a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Newcastle in Australia, more than 30 years of experience in corporate finance, and the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™ (CRPC®) designation, Larissa brings both technical expertise and thoughtful perspective to her work.

Having lived and worked in South Africa, Australia, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States, she has developed a deep appreciation for the different paths people take through life and the common desire to create security and opportunity for those they love. This global perspective ultimately inspired the creation of Protea Wealth, named after South Africa’s national flower – a symbol of resilience, growth, and transformation.

Beyond her professional experience, Larissa’s approach has been shaped by her training as a 500-hour certified yoga instructor, which taught her the importance of presence, patience, and creating space for others to be heard. She often returns to the idea that “we build ourselves out of the stories we tell,” believing that financial planning is most effective when it reflects the deeper story a client wants to live. Whether walking with her German Shepherd, Rumo, spending time with her husband John and their three sons, or serving her community through charitable and economic development initiatives, she remains grounded in the relationships that matter most. Larissa is committed to helping clients navigate life’s transitions with clarity and confidence, always guided by a simple principle: people come first.

Mark Youngs

Financial Advisor

Mark began his career in the financial services industry in 1981, where he was fortunate to be mentored by someone who believed every client relationship should begin with a written financial plan. More than 44 years later, through periods of economic growth and multiple market recessions, that philosophy continues to shape the way he serves clients today.

Over the years, Mark has completed extensive, multi-year training in financial planning, including tax planning, investment strategy development, and ongoing personal financial planning. Having experienced numerous market cycles firsthand, he has seen the value of building customized investment allocations that are aligned with each client’s financial plan and long-term goals. He believes it’s important to understand not just what you’re investing in, but what you’re investing for.

Service has always been a defining part of Mark’s life, both professionally and personally.
He has been married to his wife, Pam, for 44 years, and together they have one son, who serves as a lieutenant with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and is also a physician assistant.
Since 9/11, Mark has worked closely with the first responder community, providing financial guidance through the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in line-of-duty death situations. He is also a member of the Maryland LAST Team (Local Assistance State Team), a statewide response team that supports families following a line-of-duty death in Maryland.

Perhaps his favorite title, however, is “Bumpa” to four of the people who mean the most to him: Blake, Luke, Camryn, and Hazel. When he’s not working with clients, Mark enjoys pursuing his hobbies as a lapidarist and woodturner, exploring the outdoors through hiking and biking, and relaxing with the occasional pint of beer. For Mark, financial planning has always been about more than investments and strategies. It’s about helping people navigate life’s most important moments with thoughtful guidance, steady support, and a financial plan built around what matters most.
